Cisco Umbrella · AS36692
OpenDNS, founded in 2005 and acquired by Cisco in 2015, was one of the earliest public DNS services. It pioneered the model of offering optional content categories for filtering — parents and schools could block adult content, gambling, or social media at the DNS level by signing up for a free OpenDNS account.
208.67.222.222 (and 208.67.220.220) without an account behaves like any other recursive resolver. With a registered account, you can attach the IP to your network and configure category-based filtering. Cisco Umbrella, the paid enterprise version, builds on the same infrastructure with advanced threat intelligence.
Operated by Cisco under AS36692. Supports DNS-over-HTTPS via doh.opendns.com. The IP also responds on port 5353 for legacy DNS-over-HTTPS variants.
OpenDNS Home is free for personal use. Cisco Umbrella for enterprises is paid.
You sign up at opendns.com, register your home IP, and choose categories to block. When devices on your network query 208.67.222.222, blocked domains return a Cisco-hosted block page.
